![]() ![]() I hereby return House Bill 3325 with a specific recommendation for change. Illinois General Assembly Vehicle Tinted Window Film Bill Status Want to stay up to date? Check out the bill status at the Illinois General Assembly website: Currently the bill sits in the Illinois Senate after being given the “OK” by the Transportation committee. As of April 2nd, 2009 the Illinois House unanimously passed the bill in favor of the change. Many states currently have similar rules regarding vehicle window tint, and it seems Illinois won’t be far behind. The new notion rests in simple fact that drivers or passengers of motor vehicles should be able to protect themselves from skin cancer, while at the same time to protecting the environment from the harmful emissions created by the excessive and unnecessary use of vehicle air-conditioning systems. As it stands, drivers are not allowed to have any non-reflective or reflective tint film on the windows directly adjacent to each side of the driver, however if the new law takes force it will allow motorists to have window tint on the front drivers and front passengers windows which allows a 50% light transmittance. It deals with window film, more commonly referred to as window tint. Illinois is potentially changing one of its most disfavored laws among motorist. Please see the comment section for a quick update on the status of this bill. Unsure of the VLT on your vehicle’s windows? Bring your car to your local window tint company and they will most likely be able to measure it for you. As the beam of light is intercepted by the window, the receiving sensor measures the amount of light that passes through and gives the VLT as a percentage. Tint meters work by shining light from one sensor to the other through the window. Both measure the percentage of VLT the same way, but horseshoe tint meters easily slide over the top of an open window, whereas tint meters with magnetic probes can be used on windows that cannot be opened, like the windshield and rear window. There are two types: horseshoe tint meters and tint meters with magnetic probes. Tint meters are commonly used to measure window tint. If you’re looking to purchase aftermarket window tint, be sure that you compensate for the preexisting tint in order to stay within your state’s legal limits. Most modern vehicles come with a preexisting privacy tint on the windows, usually around 75-85%. What Percentage VLT is Factory Window Tint? This calculation is typically given in a percentage where again the higher the number the more percent of visible light able to pass through. This tool is placed on either side of the window and measures the amount of visible light passing through. VLT is calculated using a specialized tint measurement tool. A lower VLT percentage indicates a lower amount of light able to transmit through the glass. Window tint is determined by the percentage of visible light which passes through the window, also known as visible light transmission (VLT). Let’s start with what is measured when it comes to window tint. ![]()
